SoundWood
SoundWood is a sawmilling business located on the Sound of Mull on the site of a former Forestry Commission sawmill, which was at one time operated by evacuees from St Kilda.
The business is owned and run by qualified forester Jake Willis, who has chosen to diversify into quality timber processing. The business also offers on-site mobile milling, fully qualified tree surgery, and seasoned firewood for local delivery.

Scottish hardwood
SoundWood sources timber from local under-managed woodlands, aiming to bring these woods back into a healthy state of management. Oak, Ash, Elm (some burry) and Sycamore are the principal hardwood species sawn. We carry a small stock of air-dried 1” and 2” boards which can be kiln-dried to order. Larger section beams and lintels can also be sawn to order. Attractive,machined Sycamore flooring will be available from 2010.
Timber Cladding
We can saw Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir and Larch for horizontal or vertical cladding, straight or waney-edged, with individual lengths up to 19’. All our timber cladding is sawn to your specification and does not require any timber treatment to enhance its natural durability. Unless a finish is applied, timber cladding will gradually change with exposure to sunlight to an elegant, silver-grey colour. We are happy to recommend cladding options for your project.
Structural timber
We saw Larch, Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce to order for bespoke house and shed projects. Beams up to 2.5’ across by 19’ long can be sawn on our Woodmizer LT20.
Mobile milling
We offer an affordable on-site milling service with the Woodmizer LT20 for customers who have their own logs from which they would like to generate their own beams or planks. Please phone for to discuss your project.
